Decreasing Mental Load Throughout the Day

When we mentally shift away from a task without truly “closing” it out, part of our attention may remain tied to what we’ve just left behind. Repeated several times a day, this back-and-forth can contribute to the feeling that we’ve been running around a lot without really having had time to settle down.

In my new Wellness Snack, I suggest a very short cognitive recovery micro-break to use before moving from one task to the next.

A micro-break between tasks

Two simple steps are all it takes:

1. Close the loop

“This task is done; I’m moving on to the next one.”

2. Refocus

“What’s the next concrete action? ”

Just a few seconds to help our brain let go of one thing and more consciously direct our attention to the next.

And why not share this micro-break with your peers. 😊 It’s a simple tool that’s easy to incorporate into the workday.
